Review: Animal Farm and 1984

Animal Farm and 1984 Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It is the year 2017 and this book rings true to what is happening in the country of North Korea at the present moment in history. The North Koreans have had their rations cut and their leader uses all the money to build weapons of mass destruction. Too bad we could not drop copies of this book into the North Korean hands. Having been born a free American I see certain aspects that concern me here in my own country and around the world. Why does power so change people? So far in all of history, we have dealt with individuals who have become despots whose only aim is to take take take. When will we all learn that power to one or just a few people will change them mostly for the worst? Such a sad tale but one that is important to learn.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Loren of the family Nelda has had enough of being beaten by her parents, so when she spies a stranger traveling through her forest homelands she bids him to take her with him. From the moment Loren leaves home she finds herself involved with the King's Law, thieves but also finds friends that she becomes attached to. The dagger she carries from her home has strange markings and jewels attached, she has named it Nightblade. But what do others know about this blade and its secrets? I am hooked on finding out what happens in this series and have added this author to the list of "follow author". I was able to read this book on Amazon Prime which I downloaded to my kindle app. This book reminded me of novels by J.R. Tolkien and the Game of Thrones series which are two of my favorites.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wonderful, I really liked the plot and characters in this story about several coins that go missing after the death of the owner that once belonged to Judas Iscariot making them immensely valuable. All leads so far lead to his niece Linden who has gone missing but of course, we all know that the most likely suspect is not going to be the most obvious one who committed the crime. Linden teams up with Alex who was hired to find Linden, together they set out to locate the coins so she can clear her name. I won this book through the Goodreads giveaways, thank you.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In this fantastical story, we are introduced to a world that's been influenced by two men, brothers, one a poet and another artist. What makes these men unique is their writing and art opens doors into heaven. I found the first part of the book somewhat hard to follow but once I became familiar with all the characters I was drawn into their adventures and look forward to reading the rest of this series.

An intriguing fictional story delving into the world of American and Russian espionage by placing spies that will coerce scientists into stealing top-secret documents. Review: Gods of Howl Mountain

Gods of Howl Mountain Gods of Howl Mountain by Taylor Brown
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this historical fiction, we meet a slew of unique characters that have been traumatized by war, violence, and poverty. Rory a Korean war veteran who has returned to Grannie Mae's home in rural Wilkes Couty of North Carolina missing a leg drives some souped-up race cars through the nights delivering moonshine and along the way become infatuated with the local serpent preachers daughter. Will Rory find and enact vengeance on the man who left his mother so traumatized that she resides in the local insane asylum? Are the men who drive and build these suped-up cars destined to start a national trend? I am always pleased with a book if I come away with some knowledge or wisdom that will stay with me, this book has done that and more. Will there be a sequel? I do hope so, I think this would make a great movie. Justin Beil as Rory? #BookReview #GodsofHowlMountain

Review: Look for Me

Look for Me Look for Me by Lisa Gardner
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Detective D.D. Warren has big plans this weekend with her son and husband to choose a dog from the local shelter but she dragged away when she gets a call concerning the murder of four family members. Tasked with solving this brutal murder she must also search the city for the last remaining member of the city. Could the missing teenage daughter be the murderer? or is she a victim? Was this murder related to possible child abuse allegations when the children had been briefly put in foster care with the state? or was one of the teenage girl involved with gangs? And how can some local survivors of violent crimes be able to assist the police? I like the characters and the fact that unfortunately, all the scenarios were believable in the present. Keep them coming, Lisa Gardner, I really enjoy your writing.

King Richard is best known for his role in the tale of Robin Hood. But do you know anything else about King Richard? One of my favorite subjects is history and these short novels by Hourly History are perfect as a starting point into the lives of historical figures that have shaped our world. Has our society learned anything from history? In my own opinion, we have not. Power changes people and not always in a good manner. But we all have to start somewhere and reading about history is a good start to learning how to live today.

Year One Year One by Nora Roberts
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nora Roberts is a first-class writer who delivers an outstanding performance consistently with her writing. My first encounter with this author was with her J.D. Robb crime series, but I have read many of her other novels as well, and each and everyone one has been a first-class novel. In this apocalyptic thriller, we find the world plunged into chaos after a family unleashes a supernatural power that spreads a disease that will decimate the earth leaving those who have survived to overcome the violence to start a better life with their new magical abilities. Who will survive and who will perish? An exciting page turner with many characters you will love or hate so don't wait to get your copy of this riveting book.

Eye of the Beholder Eye of the Beholder by Elizabeth Cooke
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

As a lover of art, I was familiar with all the painters that were selected for this book. But as a woman, I was appalled at the treatment of those young women who modeled for paintings and found themselves in a sexual relationship with the artist. Not all the artists in the book took advantage of their models. My disillusion with the book was because still today we shrug off the fact that some men are predators feeding on the young and innocent. When will stop sweeping sexual inequality as a trivial crime?

He is called "the Abomination" who is a monster killing monsters who are on a first name basis with Lucifer, in fact, Jim who goes by several names held the Lucifer position in Hell for a brief time. This book was funny and really sick in so many disturbing ways. Jim/Slim our hero? murderer? finds that he has been killed for good this time around and is back in Hell. He teams up with a bunch of misfits and a few Angels who are on a quest to end the war between Heaven and Hell. It was a rip-roaring time through the lands of Hell with its bogs of blood and sewage or the brutal deserts and mountains with no water. This book was fun, witty, a dash of good historical subject matter, substantial characters to relate with encouragement or hostility in a land where men are considered superior to women.

In 1593 Queen Elizabeth enacted a new bill named the "Act Against Puritans. In this bill, she requires that all individuals over the age of sixteen be responsible in attending church services on a weekly basis or face fines, imprisonment, and other such judicial penalties that were popular at that time.

Repression, no freedom of religion.

Not as horrific as I was lead to believe. It was set in a time and place where strangers became friends due to the mear isolation of their lives. This was my first chance to read anything from author Joesph Sheridan Le Fanu who wrote this Vampire themed novel in 1871. He will be a most welcome addition to my to "follow" list of authors. The undead vampires have been and will be a subject of fear and nightmare for many years to come. A good thriller is always a good way to spend an evening alone.

Island of the Blue Foxes: Disaster and Triumph on the World's Greatest Scientific Expedition Island of the Blue Foxes: Disaster and Triumph on the World's Greatest Scientific Expedition by Stephen R. Bown
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Siberia is still a significant mass of land with its severe cold winters & a low density of inhabitants, From its history we see visions of the harsh life of those who were sent there to prison, work camps or into exile and ultimately an untimely agonizing death. In today's world of satellites and drones, it has become harder to imagine what explorers faced without the fancy equipment we so readily rely upon today. In Stephen R. Bown's 2017 novel "Island of Blue Foxes" published by Da Capo Press he leads us on a most excellent look into the trails and tribulations that befall all those seeking to penetrate the unknown against unforeseeable obstacles that will stand in the way of the most tenacious explorers of the past. With little knowledge of what to expect on their journey, many influential men took part to blaze a trail over Siberia to build boats to cross the Bering Sea to the new lands of the America's. This historical fiction does justice to the men and women who risked their lives by bringing their tale into the light for all to enjoy. I requested to read a Kindle version of this book from NetGalley because I am a fan of historical fictions. The author did his job so well that I was transported back in time and felt my emotions swayed from page to page as more calamity or triumph befell these travelers. It was a non-stop roller coaster ride that provided unabating beauty along with unprecedented danger at every turn.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Strong women in historical fictions are a favorite genre of mine, so when I got the chance to read this first book on the young life of German-born Katharina von Bora, I was delighted to give in exchange an honest review of the book. Author Margaret Skea successfully transports us back in time to the early 1500's during the turbulent changes happening with the then reformation of the Catholic Church by such theologians as Dr. Martin Luther. She delivers a compelling narrative of the life of young Katharina abandoned into a nunnery at the tender age of five until her marriage to Martin Luther in 1525.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Such a disturbing subject to write about. But one that we all must address if we are ever to eradicate these beasts who feed on our young innocent children. For me, there is no punishment too severe for the scum who prey on these pure unblemished children. I cried, I laughed, I go mad and now I am left with a hole in me that wants in some way to help these young victims. I feel in love with Mags, Cali, Max, Seth and Juju and would like to hear more about them. If everyone was made more aware of these crimes and taught lessons to prevent abductions maybe we can slow down the human trafficking on earth. Hope…..is what keeps us alive.

Review: Season of Blood

Season of Blood Season of Blood by Jeri Westerson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Crispin Guest an honored knight who has fallen from grace by an act of treason against the King has been hired as a "Tracker" to find a young women's niece from a former Sheriff whom Crispin is quite familiar with from past experiences. Cistercian monks, murderers, thieves, politicians, coppers, a damsel in distress plus some of London's colorful street dwellers act as faithful friends and consultants to Mr. Guests in his quest to solve the mystery of the Holy relic of Hailes and the death of several monks. The characters were fun, but I would have liked to read more on some of their past adventures that were hinted at but never enlighted upon within the pages of this book.

Review: Death Wind

Death Wind Death Wind by Travis Heermann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you have a weak stomach, you might want to pass on this story but for us horror fans it was blood-soaked, so real, I was on the edge of my chair much of the time. As an evil hunger spawned from hatred and fear ravages the desolate Black Hills of the Dakota Territory where the once mighty bison roamed in great numbers in which the Sioux or Lakota Indians found their meager means to survive. Can the small town of White Pine and the White River Agency Camp were the Lakota Indians have been coraled after the Massacre at Wounded Knee shelter themselves from the madness that comes in the form of a massive storm which carries madness and death within its path of destruction?

Review: The Oracle

The Oracle The Oracle by Tania Fay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A young Irish Canadain lass of twelve finds herself thrown into a land of fantastical creatures after the recent death of her father when she makes the pilgrimage to her father's homeland of Ireland to scatter his ashes. Author Tania Fay uses her own life experiences and heritage to focus her writing talent on educating others on the folklore of Ireland. Along the way, you will be entertained by some pixies, elves, selkies, witches, warlocks, and dragons but you will also learn some Gaelic. My only concern was the many similarities it had with some of some of the other YA stories on this subject, i.e., Harry Potter. Overall I enjoyed reading this story; it is well worth reading, there is some great dialogue, good sound characters, and an adventure that saves others while learning about ourselves. I look forward to more adventures with Eile and her friends.

Aggie Boyle and the Lost Beauty Aggie Boyle and the Lost Beauty by David Fine

The value that beauty lies within is a good lesson to learn but one that 's hard for a young teenage girl to grasp when her classmates bully her. When twelve years old homely always polite Aggie short for Agatha finds herself transformed into a small mammal she finds herself entangled in a web of lies concerning her life. Is she a witch with magical powers? Where did she get these powers? Will her new powers be enough to save her family and friends before the full moon chimes midnight on the eve of the five-hundred-year-old spell that will destroy a small town and all its residents? What she finds in her adventure is family members whom she did not know she had until her world went bonkers, friends she had thought had disappeared forever, new friends and an inner magical power that will help those in need from a ruthless villain. This story was a testament that we can all treat each other with respect and caring. Loved it, brought a warmth to my heart when how selfless Aggy give's back to the world with her generosity.

Review: The World of Tomorrow

The World of Tomorrow The World of Tomorrow by Brendan Mathews
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The year is 1939, and the world is on the brink of the second world war while the borough of Queens, New York hosts the World's Fair-themed in a futuristic setting, thus the title of the book, "The World of Tomorrow." From the rough ever green turbulent island of Ireland comes two brothers to New York City in search of their brother Martin who had left years previously to pursue his dream of becoming a famous musician. This book reminds me of the song David Allen Coe sings in which there is Mama, prison, a train, and drinking. This book also has it all too. IRA revolutionists, a Jewish woman who's work visa is about to expire, a visiting King and Queen, some high-bred society types to the Harlem's Jazz clubs with Negro players, a seminary student gone deaf and dumb, a prisoner on the lamb, the debutant sister unsure of her upcoming marriage while her sister struggles with her nosey landlord and her growing brood or the country lass who must part with her man when a gangster comes calling for payback of past deeds……. All are memorable characters that are well developed with side stories all their own. Written in a first-person repertoire that I found intriguing to jump from one person's thoughts and feeling's to another's. This book's layout was fashioned in an easy to follow manner with titled chapters by days in a calendar style using an art deco typography font that was carried over from the front cover.
