Review: Year One

Year One Year One by Nora Roberts
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nora Roberts is a first-class writer who delivers an outstanding performance consistently with her writing. My first encounter with this author was with her J.D. Robb crime series, but I have read many of her other novels as well, and each and everyone one has been a first-class novel. In this apocalyptic thriller, we find the world plunged into chaos after a family unleashes a supernatural power that spreads a disease that will decimate the earth leaving those who have survived to overcome the violence to start a better life with their new magical abilities. Who will survive and who will perish? An exciting page turner with many characters you will love or hate so don't wait to get your copy of this riveting book.

Beaton we find Hamish knee-deep in suspects after a local newcomer who seemed to have insulted just about everyone he came in contact with is found dead in a peat bog. My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This well-structured book has high-quality images along with easy to follow step-by-step instructions that will have you creating and crafting some uniques designs on yourself, family and friends in henna or incorporating the same designs on objects such as a glass jar and just about any surface artists use as a canvas. I myself have incorporated some of the designs into Mandalas for coloring. My next project I want to try on some Mason Jars as shown in the book for gift giving this holiday season.

When aging Mariah Ellison receives an ominous package, with a murder weapon hidden within some Chrismas pudding she is drawn into the solving a twenty-year-old mystery that involved her dear friends. Chilling describes the subject matter when the rape of two young girls floods back memories of past cruelties inflicted upon her by her husband. Can Mariah along with the help of her nephew find enough evidence to put this monster away for good? This is a perfect book to curl up with anywhere you have a few short hours, being one hundred and seventy-seven pages long this makes a great travel companion or stocking stuffer. Review: Next of Kin

Next of Kin Next of Kin by James Tucker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Riveting, I could not put this book down. It moved at a good pace from one atrocity to another in this thriller. The sins of the fathers who became wealthy by stealing and killing the Jews will come back to enact vengeance upon future generations. He kills with a hatchet then leaves his victims chopped in mutilated lumps and you'll never know who the killer is until the very end. Looking forward to what this author has to offer in the future.

Review: Eye of the Beholder

Eye of the Beholder Eye of the Beholder by Elizabeth Cooke
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

As a lover of art, I was familiar with all the painters that were selected for this book. But as a woman, I was appalled at the treatment of those young women who modeled for paintings and found themselves in a sexual relationship with the artist. Not all the artists in the book took advantage of their models. My disillusion with the book was because still today we shrug off the fact that some men are predators feeding on the young and innocent. When will stop sweeping sexual inequality as a trivial crime?

Review: The Kill Society

The Kill Society The Kill Society by Richard Kadrey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

He is called "the Abomination" who is a monster killing monsters who are on a first name basis with Lucifer, in fact, Jim who goes by several names held the Lucifer position in Hell for a brief time. This book was funny and really sick in so many disturbing ways. Jim/Slim our hero? murderer? finds that he has been killed for good this time around and is back in Hell. He teams up with a bunch of misfits and a few Angels who are on a quest to end the war between Heaven and Hell. It was a rip-roaring time through the lands of Hell with its bogs of blood and sewage or the brutal deserts and mountains with no water. I really enjoyed this book and will be picking up, in the beginning, I am a fan for life.

If her brother-in-law's death is ruled to be a suicide, then all his possessions will become the property of the Duke, leaving her sister and her two children penniless and without a home. Bess searches for clues in all the wrong and right places. Upon meeting the elected Constable, where there seems to be some mutual attraction between them, but she has her doubts as to whether he can complete the task at hand without her continued help. This book was fun, witty, a dash of good historical subject matter, substantial characters to relate with encouragement or hostility in a land where men are considered superior to women.

In 1593 Queen Elizabeth enacted a new bill named the "Act Against Puritans. In this bill, she requires that all individuals over the age of sixteen be responsible in attending church services on a weekly basis or face fines, imprisonment, and other such judicial penalties that were popular at that time.

Repression, no freedom of religion.

Review: Carmilla

Carmilla Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Not as horrific as I was lead to believe. It was set in a time and place where strangers became friends due to the mear isolation of their lives. This was my first chance to read anything from author Joesph Sheridan Le Fanu who wrote this Vampire themed novel in 1871. He will be a most welcome addition to my to "follow" list of authors. The undead vampires have been and will be a subject of fear and nightmare for many years to come. A good thriller is always a good way to spend an evening alone.

When Dougal first received the email concerning the deaths of four small-town librarians in the state of Oregon, he was tempted to delete the message, but he did not. Now he is knee deep back on his home turf of Twisted Cedars with not only the four librarian murders from the seventies, his sister's wedding to the wrong man, a dead body in the vegetable garden, losing his heart to the local librarian, cryptic messages from his murderous father and a possible suicide that may shed light on all that is happening in Oregon.
